The Illinois Solar Decathlon (ISD), a student-led interdisciplinary organization at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has officially broken ground on the new site for its latest housing project, the BEACON Home, in Rantoul, Illinois. BEACON stands for Building Energy-Efficient Affordable Community-Oriented Neighborhoods, reflecting ISD’s broader mission to create long-term community impact through sustainable and affordable housing solutions.

BEACON Home is a 1,700+ square-foot, 3-bedroom, 2-bath, all-electric, solar-powered single-family home currently under development, with project completion anticipated in Summer 2026. The home is being developed in partnership with the Village of Rantoul, Habitat for Humanity, and Broeren Russo Builders, which is serving as the project’s general contractor. Once completed, the home will be donated to a local family through Habitat for Humanity, making it a permanent part of the community.

This groundbreaking marks a major milestone as the project transitions from pre-construction design into active construction. According to the team’s February newsletter, site preparation and early construction activities began in early February 2026, with ISD now participating in weekly owner-architect-contractor (OAC) meetings alongside Broeren-Russo to receive construction updates, coordinate subcontractors, and finalize design details. In addition to these meetings, ISD members are continuing weekly site visits to inspect work, document progress, and gain direct exposure to real-world construction management practices.

The project remains fully student-led, with students across engineering, architecture, construction management, and design contributing to every stage of development—from energy modeling and technical system design to budgeting, fundraising, construction coordination, and stakeholder engagement. The team’s seven subteams continue to support key areas including architecture, photovoltaics and electrical systems, water, site development, construction management, HVAC, and lighting/appliances/home automation.

BEACON Home builds on the legacy of ISD’s previous work while adapting to a new chapter beyond the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Build Challenge. With the Build Challenge cancelled indefinitely, ISD has evolved its model to pursue a direct community-based housing project that preserves the same emphasis on high-performance design, experiential learning, and applied sustainability. Through strong industry sponsorship, faculty mentorship, and community partnerships, BEACON Home continues to serve as both an educational platform for students and a tangible investment in affordable, energy-efficient housing in Central Illinois.
