The Grainger Center for Electric Machinery and Electromechanics (CEME) at the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign is seeking candidates for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in the area of
the design of electric machines in the context of an application, based on a semiconductor drive.
Broadly, we are seeking to study system-level trade-offs among motor technologies and designs, drive
designs, control methods, and sensing for load-adaptive electromechanical actuation. Past work has
included “more silicon” drives in which additional semiconductor switches and multiple phases trade
against motor design, dynamic controls that maximize efficiency or other operating attributes, and
multi-stage power conversion that adjusts the bus voltage feeding an inverter.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Take on leadership roles in a research program on motor systems
• Assist in supervising student researchers
• Interact effectively with CEME faculty and staff
• Prepare publications and proposals
• Carry out other duties as assigned by the CEME director and supervisor
Qualified candidates must have an earned doctorate in engineering; experience with analysis and design
of electric motors, drives, and motor control; peer-reviewed publications that document this
experience; and excellent written and spoken English fluency. Additional preferred qualifications
include experience with prototyping and hardware development, and with experimental work related to
electric machines and drive systems.
The anticipated starting date is January 1, 2022, with an anticipated one-year duration. The start date
and duration have some flexibility. This is a 12-month, 100%-time appointment with applicable
University benefits. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is
grant funded and subject to the yearly reappointment process. Possibility of extending the appointment
is contingent upon availability of funds.
To ensure full consideration, send a complete curriculum vitae with publication list, names and contact
information for at least three professional references, and a summary not to exceed three pages of
experience and plans relevant to this position by November 1, 2021, to machines@ece.illinois.edu.
